Marcela is a Graphic Designer from the beautiful city of Guadalajara, Mexico. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in the Western Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESO in Tlajomulco, Mexico).

During her studies, she was working part-time with one of her professors in his design and photography studio for about a year, before moving to work at Casa Xavier, which is Mexico’s largest provider of publicity items. For a period of two years, she was part of the company’s Design Department, and then got promoted to join the Marketing Department, where she helped to develop the company’s advertising strategy and a new identity manual for the company’s communication instruments. At the same time, she was enrolled in an internship with one of her university’s most prominent programs, the Integral Gestation and Civic Construction of Public Spaces Program, which is aimed to improve life quality and to encourage local development in a marginalized and poor urban area of Jalisco, Mexico, through a process involving all aspects of an urban design.

After graduating from the university, she was eager to apply her acquired skills while broadening her cultural horizons and to get to know a different environments of design. She therefore chose to perform an AIESEC internship in Accra, Ghana. There, she worked for six months as a Graphic Designer and marketing assistant for a French/Lebanese distributor of wines and spirits. She then encouraged herself to start her own Graphic Design consultancy business, since there is currently a growing need for qualified Graphic Designers in Accra. Her clients included the German Association for Development Cooperation (GIZ), the Embassy of Switzerland, several NGOs as well as private sector actors, such as the South African beverage producer Slo-Jo. She also made a six-month internship with the Hanns Seidel Foundation West Africa.

From the MAID, she expects to acquire new skills such as the further development of graphical solutions in society-related areas (say, communication, identity and urban challenges). Through the program she wants to improve her methodological knowledge and research skills in an international environment, which will give her the opportunity to learn from other cultures and gather different points of view.
